Speaking of mail, here’s a thought on a somewhat related topic….

“What were the things that romanced your heart as a girl? Was it horses in a field? Was it the fragrance of the air after a summer rain? Was it a favorite book? Those were all whispers from your Lover, NOTES sent to awaken your longings. The Romancer calling once again. He has done this for us more times than we could ever count – songs, movies, cards, words from friends, moments in the woods – the Romance is everywhere. It is your name He is calling.”

~ Captivating by John and Stasi Eldridge

Romance refers to that which arouses intense emotions. And, no, I’m not referring to sex. I’m talking about those things that stir up passion… that awaken enthusiasm… that rouse a deep sense of gratitude… that fascinate and energize… that nurture joy and contentment.

It seems a little strange to envision God as a Romancer, but when I think about this aspect of His character, I realize that He’s the one who made me with unique interests, passions, and talents. And since God made me, He knows exactly what will delight my heart. It’s so cool to think that all those little things that come into my life which bring me pleasure are like love notes from God. In them, He whispers to me that He is good, that He’s with me, and that He wants good things for me. They are also meant to remind me that He is the Source of all I need, and that my deepest longings for the kind of goodness that always satisfies and never leaves me wanting can only be fulfilled by God Himself.

And on a another note…

“You are a LETTER from Christ, written not with ink, but the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.”

~ II Corinthians 3:3

What a thing! That God wants to write His love on another’s heart through me. That by God’s Spirit, He can communicate His grace, His mercy, His PASSION for another person through my life. How often am I unconscious, unable or unwilling to be a love letter from God to the people around me – whether family, friend, or fellow human who crosses my path?

I am passionate about this, but I am so forgetful when going about my daily life. Yet God continues to urge me on in this endeavor, first to walk through my day with Him, listening for His voice and watching for what He’s doing around me, and second to cooperate with Him in the good He wants to do.

What a privilege to be a blessing. God can use anything… a kind word, a friendly smile, a helpful gesture, even a note in the mailbox.
